CBP Recommends to Canadian Government to Adopt a "No One Left Behind" Mentality when Entering the Digital Age
CBP contributes its submission on Improving Canada's Digital Advantage

TORONTO - Out with the old, in with the new? Not according to the Canadian Business Press (CBP). From May 10th to July 13th, the Canadian Government hosted, Digital Economy Strategy Consultations, an online national consultation aimed at building consensus among governments, the private sector, academia and the Canadian public in developing a digital economy strategy.

The CBP contributed a submission on Improving Canada's Digital Advantage. The major recommendations are as follows:

  • The government must remain impartial and provide equal funding for traditional and digital media.
  • The government must recognize the need for training workers unfamiliar with new forms of communications and digital media.
  • The government must develop standards for digital content formatting and delivery.

"The B2B publishing industry is neither solely print nor just digital," said Karen Dalton, Executive Director, CBP. "Our audience is engaged in a combined information gathering process that includes print, online, mobile apps and video. The challenge the government faces in creating Canada's digital content lies in finding a balance between traditional and new media."

The key themes discussed during Digital Economy Strategy Consultations were:

  • Capacity to Innovate Using Digital Technologies;
  • Building a World-Class Digital Infrastructure;
  • Growing the Information and Communications Technology Industry;
  • Digital Media: Creating Canada's Digital Content Advantage; and
  • Building Digital Skills for Tomorrow.

CBP elects three new directors at 91st annual general meeting.

TORONTO - The Canadian Business Press (CBP) announced the names of the 2010-2011 Board of Directors and Officers, on June 29, at its 91st Annual General Meeting held in Toronto. I would like to thank the current Board members for their support and encouragement over the last year. I am confident that our new Directors will bring vitality and fresh ideas to our Board table.

"In the fall, the Board approved proceeding with the industry information sources study conducted by Starch Research to measure the effectiveness of specialized business publications versus other information sources. The results of the study, released in April 2010, are available on our website and demonstrate again that b2b titles are the most important source of information after the internet in seven industry sectors," noted Kerr.

The following officers were elected to serve a second term:

Chair - John W. Kerr Jr., Chief Executive Officer, Kerrwil Publications Ltd., Toronto
1st Vice-Chair - James O. Hall, President, Keith Communications Inc., Mississauga
2nd Vice-Chair - Mark Vreugdenhil, Publisher, Newcom Business Media, Toronto
Past Chairman - Alex Papanou, Vice-President, Business Information Group, Toronto

The following CBP directors are serving the remainder of their three-year terms:

  • Jeff Brownlee, Publisher, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Toronto

  • Lee Ann Knudsen, Publisher, Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association, Milton
  • Terri Pavelic, Publisher, Promotive Communications, Aurora
  • David McClung, President, Baxter Travel Media Inc., Toronto
  • Michael Swan, President, Swan-Erickson Publishing Inc., Oakville
  • Bill Whitelaw, President, JuneWarren - Nickle's Energy Group, Calgary

Three retiring directors were recognized with certificates for their years of service to the CBP Board at the meeting: Michael Atkins, Chairman of IT World Canada Inc., served 25 years; Brian Light, Past President of Salon Communications Inc., served 14 years and Rosanna Caira, Editor and Publisher at Kostuch Publications Limited, was acknowledged for her six years on the Board.

Following the meeting, Bruce Creighton presented highlights of CBP's Strategic Plan for 2010-2011.

CBP Information Sources Study

The Starch Information Sources Study 2010 results will be released to participating publishers next week. The study objective was: To measure the effectiveness of specialized business publications versus other information sources. The study was conducted by direct mail and measured 14 media information sources in seven business/professional markets.

The seven industry sectors were Manufacturing, Retail, Automotive & Trucking, Information Technology, Resources & Construction, Agriculture and Travel/Tourism.

The study universe was the combined unduplicated circulation of the major publications covering the specific marketplaces - 58 individual publications. This is the highest level of publisher participation in any of the Information Sources Studies conducted to date. For each market, the random lists submitted by each participating publication were merged to create a master file.

The research shows that the B2B industry is still ranked in the top two of information sources, falling just behind the internet in five of the seven sectors. The research provides valuable information needed to develop suitable marketing programs to position the industry for growth and stability.

Special Bulletin
Canada Periodical Fund
Aid to Publishers Application Guide now available
Deadline for applications is February 19, 2010

The Department of Canadian Heritage announced that the Canada Periodical Fund has been launched for 2010-2011, beginning with the Aid to Publishers component.

The program's Web site has been updated with comprehensive information on the Aid to Publishers component, including eligibility criteria and how to apply. The Web site can be found at the following link:
www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/fcp-cpf/index-eng.cfm

Aid to Publishers is now accepting applications for 2010-2011, and the application deadline is February 19, 2010. Please see the Application Guide for more details, and information on the special application process that is in place for the program's first year.

Details for the other two CPF components, Business Innovation and Collective Initiatives, will be released shortly.

The Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) provides financial assistance to the Canadian magazine and non-daily newspaper industries so they can continue to produce and distribute Canadian content

Aid to Publishers provides funding to eligible Canadian print magazines and non-daily newspapers calculated using a formula based on eligible copies sold or distributed by verified request over a 12-month period. At least 5000 copies must have been sold or distributed by request during this period. Publishers are able to use funding to support the creation of content, production, distribution, online activities, or business development.

Important changes from existing programs

2010-2011 is the first year of the CPF, which is replacing the Publications Assistance Program (PAP) and the Canada Magazine Fund (CMF). Here are some of the main differences between the CPF and the programs it is replacing:

The main features of the Support for Editorial Content component of the CMF have been combined with the main features of the PAP. As a result, publishers only need to apply once and they have the flexibility to spend program funds on a wide range of activities, including editorial creation, design, production, printing, marketing, single-copy distribution, postage, and online activities.

Publishers familiar with the PAP should note these changes: payments from the Aid to Publishers component will be made directly to publishers, not through accounts at Canada Post and publishers will no longer be required to use Canada Post's Publication Mail. Subsidized mailing costs through the PAP will end on March 31, 2010.

Aid to Publishers

The Aid to Publishers component provides funding to eligible Canadian print magazines and non-daily newspapers calculated using a formula based on copies distributed over a year. Publishers are able to use funding to support the creation of content, production, distribution, online activities, or business development.

For more detailed program information including eligibility criteria, please see:
Aid to Publishers Application Guide, 2010-2011

Special application system for the program’s first year

Two application processes will be used in 2010-2011. Please read the following to see which process applies to you. This system is only available for 2010-2011 and in future years all applicants will use the standard process.

A. Special “one time-only” process for current recipients of the CMF and the PAP

Current PAP and CMF recipients, which are listed here, will be invited by email to apply using a special attestation form.

If your publication is listed as a current recipient, do not use the standard application form. Wait for the invitation to apply by email.

If your publication is listed as a current recipient and you do not receive an email by January 25, 2010, please contact us before the deadline.

More information about this special application process is available in part C of the Aid to Publishers Application Guide and in the email sent to current recipients.

B. Standard Aid to Publishers process for all other applicants

If your publication is not listed as a current recipient, you may apply using the standard application process described in part D of the Aid to Publishers Application Guide and the standard Aid to Publishers Application Form.
