56th  Annual KRW Awards

For the first time in its 56-year history, the Kenneth R. Wilson Awards will be co-produced by the Canadian Business Press and Magazines Canada. This partnership will provide a broader, deeper and more truly national platform for the celebration of bilingual excellence in Canada's Business Press.

A Governing Board that includes representatives from across the industry and working with Barbara Gould & Associates—the same firm that has produced the National Magazine Awards for 5 years—has been mandated to reassess every aspect of the awards program and to ensure that it meets the same high standards that Canada's business editors bring to all of their publications, websites and audiences.

New to the 56th Annual KRWs is the prestigious Magazine of the Year award, which will recognize the publication that best displays overall excellence in content and design, that most consistently mirrors its mandate/mission, and that most effectively engages and serves the needs of its readers.

Four new Internet categories have been introduced in order to better recognize the importance of online activities in the engagement and service of the business industry’s audiences. And an award for Best One-of-a-Kind Article has been added to make the competition inclusive and allow for entries that are not easily classified.

We will continually strive to ensure the judging process is fair and transparent. Please take the time to read the complete list of revised rules and the description of the judging process. If you have any suggestions on how to make the awards program even better, or you would like to volunteer your time as a judge or committee member, please email us at staff@krwawards.com.

We encourage you to enter—and enter often. All members and non-members of the industry are welcome to submit. The early-bird entry fees are $100 each. Then join us to celebrate excellence when the KRWs are presented this June as part of the MagNet conference.

  In memory of
  ITWorld Canada President

  ANDREW J. WHITE

  April 1956 - December 2009

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Andrew J White, President of ITWorldCanada Inc after an 18 month battle with cancer. Andy has been the President and COO of ITWorldCanada for 20 years. Ever the optimist Andy never saw a mountain he couldn't climb and he took his fight for his health in the same positive frame of mind he evoked in his business life. To the very end Andy kept his wonderful (well British) sense of humour and his focus on what was most important.

"Andy, joined the ITWorld Canada family in 1989 when we were called Laurentian Technomedia and we owned one lonely little computer magazine called Computerdata which hardly got noticed in our stable of retail business books," said Michael Atkins. "He took control and built ITWorldCanada Inc. into the pre-eminent Canadian IT B to B media house it is today. Early on, Andy recognized the unavoidable transition of our publishing company from a print based business to a digital business and positioned ITWorldCanada to be the leader. Today web sales at ITWorld Canada outstrip print sales.

"Always an innovator, Andy loved the challenge of business and worked long hours but when he returned home to Brighton Ontario each night it was all family and of course his beloved dogs Bear and Dickens," added Atkins.

Andy is survived by wife Doni, children & step children Amanda (husband Matt), Michael, Zach & Keely, grandchildren Luke & Gwen, brother Richard (wife Fiona), and mother & and stepfather Eileen & Brian and of course the entire team here at ITWorldCanada.

"Andy was ambitious, loving, impatient, bright, thoughtful, competitive, responsible, funny and always with that irresistible twinkle in his eyes. Andy loved to have fun. He wasn't everybody's cup of tea. But if he was your cup of tea you would do anything for him. The most remarkable thing about Andy is that he grew every year I knew him," said Atkins.

"He was an extraordinary man and his courage in the face of adversity was breathtaking. He will be terribly missed and never forgotten.

"All of us at ItWorldCanada intend to continue to be loving, impatient, bright, thoughtful, competitive, responsible, and funny and occasionally will try the twinkle. He taught us well and would expect nothing less from us," said Atkins.

Michael Atkins, Chairman and principal shareholder in ItworldCanada Inc. assumes Andy's position as President, with Fawn Annan VP of Operations and Chief Strategist and Joe Tersigni VP and Group Publisher continuing their senior operating roles in the company.

Questions may be directed to any of the above.

"Determining Exhibitor ROI at B-to-B Tradeshow Events"

BPA Worldwide recently undertook a survey to determine the perceived value of independent event audits and how they are utilized when marketers are deciding to exhibit at any given business-to-business event.

The study had three main objectives:

  • Determine the key ROI drivers for b-to-b event exhibitors
  • Determine extent to which a detailed audit report of verified attendance--including  demographic data (or lack thereof)--would compel or impede exhibitors to add an event to their plan
  • Determine extent to which exhibitors hold show organizers accountable for delivering on promises of audience quantity and quality

ABC Board broadens definition of magazine digital editions, expands Canadian representation

At its recent meeting, the board of the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) expanded the
definition of a digital magazine edition to include content published via any digital means, not just an exact electronic copy. Beginning with June 2009 ABC statements, magazines may report paid digital editions in two categories: "replica," where the advertising and editorial content exactly match the printed publication, and "nonreplica," where the basic identity and content are similar to the printed edition but the articles and advertising may differ. Free, unrestricted public access to a Web site does not qualify as a paid digital edition.

The ABC board also agreed to broaden its Canadian representation and increase Canadian autonomy and control over rules and reporting to ensure that its services and policies continue to meet members' changing needs. The bureau’s Canadian committee will be expanded by six members, adding three publishing executives and three media buyers, and will become the ABC Canada board.

The action is part of a broad set of strategic changes ABC has made in recent months to better address the unique needs of the Canadian market, including several important changes to rules and audit programs intended to help contain costs, streamline audits, and address the evolving nature of the Canadian media marketplace.

The ABC board decided to postpone its 2009 annual conference, originally scheduled for Toronto this November, citing a challenging advertising market and anticipated lower attendance due to economic and industry conditions. ABC said it would host its 2010 conference in Toronto.

buysafemedia Program

In late 2007 BPA Worldwide embarked on a program to move advertising dollars out of unaudited publications and into audited titles. The effort was prompted by BPA b2b publisher members who said more media buys were made directly by client companies that had little knowledge or experience with audits. The focus of the campaign is to raise awareness of the risks inherent in using unaudited media and change buying practices in the advertising community.

Our strategy, buysafemedia, is the result of considerable background research and consultation with industry stakeholders. The program is a collaborative and industry-wide plan to draw attention to the risks incurred by advertisers who are buying unaudited media. Audited publishers are the primary beneficiaries of this campaign since the behavior change will be for media buyers to switch their dollars to audited titles only.

buysafemedia was launched as a pilot program in early 2008 and rolled out to the full US/Canadian b2b market in June.

Elements of the program include:

  • Direct mail campaign to CEOs, CFOs, and CMOs of advertiser companies who buy advertising in unaudited titles
  • Event sponsorships
  • Social media marketing that drives the individual to a high impact micro-site, www.buysafemedia.com (blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Promotion of buysafemedia through webinars
  • Contribution of content to industry training programs

The buysafemedia program continues to expand and attract publishing partners. Also, the program now has 13 Supporters (industry organizations) from both the US and Canada including AAAA, ABC, BMA., and CBP.

CA Magazine dominates at Kenneth R. Wilson Awards Night
Twelve other magazines recognized for top achievement

TORONTO, ON, June 1, 2009 – Emotions flared and winners triumphed at the 55th annual Kenneth R. Wilson Awards (KRWs) held June 1 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s John Bassett Theatre.

CA Magazine came out on top as the night’s big winner taking home six top prizes and OHS Canada Magazine won both gold and silver in the Best Technology/Industrial/Manufacturing Article category. Up Here Business magazine was also victorious, grabbing two top awards for their work in Best Profile of a Person and Best Regularly Featured Department or Column categories.

The KRWs is an annual event that recognizes and celebrates Canadian Business to Business (B2B) publishing from coast to coast. It is organized and sponsored by the Canadian Business Press (CBP). Highlights of the night included a special presentation of the Harvey Southam award to this year’s recipient Doug Bennet and a $2,320 donation – collected from a portion of every KRW entry – made to the ABC Canada Literary Foundation, CBP’s charity of choice.

“Tonight’s winners should be very proud of this recognition because their hard work over the last year helps promote and progress the talents of our rich Canadian publishing industry,” said CBP Chair Alex Papanou.

The judges handed out top prizes in 18 categories. Gold winners, who were chosen from among 180 finalists and 464 entries, each received $1,000. Silver winners received $500.

  • Mr. Shortliffe informed CBP Directors that the target date to release the Canada Periodical Fund Program Guide is September or early October 2009 for an April 2010 launch. Final details of the program will be determined before the guide is launched and CBP's advice is being sought in helping to fine tune the eligibility rules.
  • Funds will no longer be channeled through Canada Post and payments will be based on a formula using a fixed rate per copy as a starting point, rather than having support based on the weight of each copy. Payments will be made directly by Canadian Heritage to eligible publications, which may use the funds to offset distribution charges (Canada Post or any other method), editorial or business development costs, or the development of websites or other digital services tied to the title receiving support.
  • Funding will essentially be based upon a publication's annual eligible circulation (audited paid and/or request) of the preceding year and the application of a weighting formula determining a publication's circulation to be small, medium or large. This factor will be used to adjust the overall formula, which will have a starting point of a fixed rate per copy. Small publications will receive the highest amount per copy and the paperwork required in the funding application process will also be less onerous for titles designated as small.
  • While consideration is being given to transitioning publications currently receiving over $1.5 million annually down to the new maximum figure, when fully implemented the impact of the decision will result in up to an additional $6 million being made available to small and medium sized publications. The thresholds for determining a publication's size by circulation level have yet to be determined, but most business and professional publications will likely fall into the category of small publications.
  • Consideration was given to removing the eligibility of request circulation publications to the Canada Periodical Fund. However, Mr. Shortliffe was happy to report that request circulation publications will continue to receive assistance at a rate at least commensurate with that of the old Publications Assistance Program. He suggested that it was important for the industry to continue its efforts to educate officials - both elected parliamentarians and civil servants - on the rationale for supporting request circulation publications.
  • Request circulation titles will be eligible for both the "Aid to Publishers" and the "Business Innovation" components of the Canada Periodical Fund. This is a win for request titles that were not eligible for Canada Magazine Fund assistance. Among other activities, eligible publications will be able to seek "Business Innovation" component funding to assist in growing request/paid levels of circulation. The exact functioning of the component is still under development.
  • CBP sought clarification on the press release statement that "professional association publications will not be eligible" for Canada Periodical Fund assistance. It appears that this rule is largely meant to be targeted at specific professionals who are licensed either provincially or federally and was based on the fact that their not-for-profit associations pay no taxes and are, therefore, deemed to already receive Federal Government support. CBP Directors expressed concern as to the scope of this eligibility barrier, particularly as it could be interpreted to include readers in scores of business and professional publications. The Association will seek clarification of the criteria, question the objectivity of the decision and seek assurance that it be reconsidered.

CBP will now submit to Canadian Heritage its best arguments to secure the highest metric possible in respect of funding for request circulation publications, including the affect of current economic conditions in respect of publication failures, staff reductions, etc. It will focus on the importance of b2b publications to Canadian businesses and professions and the impact of a weakened business publishing sector on the overall economy.

Publishers can greatly assist in this exercise by providing Phil Boyd, who is preparing an official CBP position for delivery to Canadian Heritage, with the following information:

  • names of b2b publications that have been discontinued since September of 2008;
  • number of staff who have been released and not replaced since September 2008; and provide details on
  • advertising revenue increases/decreases between 2007 and 2008 and first quarter comparisons between 2008 and 2009 by publication. (Acknowledging that some publishers are reticent to provide actual linage figures, percentage increases or decreases would be most useful.)

Please send your report to philboyd@pbai.ca or call him for further information at 416-239-0099. Thank you.
