B-to-B Trade Show Revenues Show Slight Decline in First Three Quarters of 2008
Impacted by the current economic conditions, b-to-b trade shows are down 3.7% compared to a year ago, after the first three quarters of 2008. This is the first trade show revenue decline in seven years; revenue for trade shows grew at a CAGR of 3.1% from 2000-2007. B-to-b magazine revenue declined 5.9% in the first three quarters of 2008, generating a combined trade show and magazine decline of 4.8%
While b-to-b magazine revenues are down, five of the 21 BIN categories are showing growth. 'Agriculture,' 'Architecture, Design, & Lighting,' 'Professional Services' and 'Travel, Business Conventions & Meetings' are among these categories.
"Considering the current economic climate, business-to-business media appears to be holding up well," stated Gordon T. Hughes II, ABM's president/CEO. "For the long term, we believe that b-to-b media will continue to serve the needs of the marketing community with superior products and services, and will grow accordingly."

Canadian Business Press has compiled an Internet-based history of the business press in Canada. It is intended that the history be a living document that can be augmented and updated each year as the industry expands and adapts to the changing business media environment in this country. The new site cbp.ca/history is accessible from the home page of the present CBP website.
The purpose of the history is:
- to provide a convenient record of the development of the industry from the late 1800s to the present day;
- to illustrate to our readers, government regulatory and support institutions, the advertising community, and prospective employees the significance and scope of the industry in the Canadian economy; and
- to enable business publishers to position themselves within the context of the whole industry and to provide them with “at hand” materials to use in promotional activities.
The history is a multi-layer online document with links to a wide variety of content relevant to the business publishing industry. Content includes:
- the early history of the industry;
- profiles of active business and professional publishing companies;
- case studies of editorial initiatives that had a significant impact in selected markets;
- statistics on the size and scope of the industry;
- a chart showing the development of the industry including mergers, acquisitions, start-ups, divestitures, and closures over time;
- sections on government legislation and support programs relevant to the industry; and
- the Who’s Who of the men and women driving the industry today.
The intention is to include many historic and current images. And, because the history is a living document, we’re open to your suggestions for inclusion of other types of content.
Please make every effort to participate in this project. We feel this is an important CBP initiative and that it will make a significant contribution to demonstrating to all our audiences and stakeholders the role and influence the medium has in the Canadian economy. This objective can only be met through wide participation of Canada’s business publishers. If you have comments or content to add, please contact the CBP office at 416-239-1022 or email editor@cbp.ca

ABM and Booz & Co. Deliver a B-to-B Roadmap for Profitable Revenue Growth
Landmark study produced with ultimate goal of developing superior products and services for b-to-b marketplace
Based on input from ABM's Strategic Planning Committee, the Association recently commissioned Booz & Company to conduct an industry study exploring the most critical issues facing our membership today. Booz has identified two key pathways to success - one more traditional pathway built on serving the marketer/seller, and one evolving approach which focuses on the end-user/buyer.
Are you an ABM member who was in attendance last month for the unveiling of ABM's landmark industry study, "A Roadmap for Profitable Revenue Growth," and want to share its findings with key members of your staff?
Couldn't make it to Chicago for the study's unveiling, but as an ABM member, you want to learn important insights from its findings?
In order to enhance the value of Association membership and meet the challenges of this period of industry transformation, ABM will deliver to its members insights from the study through a variety of upcoming initiatives:
- This month, ABM will present two free members-only webcasts - both will provide an overview of the Booz study, but one will focus on the "Marketer-Driven Solutions" roadmap (December 10, 2:00 PM EST) while the other will concentrate on the pathway for those pursuing "End User-Driven Solutions" (December 18, 2:00 PM EST). Click here to register.
- Stream57, our official streaming partner, broadcasted an overview of the study from ABM's Top Management Meeting in Chicago; members can watch the archived video on demand here (at no cost). Also available are PowerPoint presentations of the overview and each of the two roadmaps.
- If you'd like to set up a meeting with Booz consultants or ask them specific questions pertaining to your business, please contact Mark Rothman at 212.681.1106.
Kevin Arsham Offers Tips for Media Agency Planners
Kevin Arsham is certainly a familiar face for many ABM members. As the vice chair of the Association's Media Advisory Board, he helped develop the Media Kit Awards program and has played a leadership role in several other ABM initiatives, even hosting one of our Cocktails & Connections events. Last month, Kevin sat down for a one-on-one conversation with the ABM Video Network.
In his new role as partner and communications planning director for MediaCom, part of Kevin's focus is ensuring that his clients are engaged with, and connected to, their customers through print, digital and face-to-face platforms. That requires media planning and strategy as well as the publisher, advertiser and agency working together to develop media specific for the customer's needs - be it a custom media print product, an industry blog or online video.
If you're interested in some insight from the media agency point of view, be sure to tune in to this Video Network broadcast (by clicking on "A Conversation with Kevin Arsham" at www.AmericanBusinessMedia.com) for more on current trends in b-to-b marketing, the surge in the creation and consumption of online video in the business media sector, and some tips and best practices for the media agency side.
At www.AmericanBusinessMedia.com, you can access any of our video content on-demand. Just click on the title in the list of videos beneath the Dragonfly player on ABM's homepage to watch our content when and how you want!
Remember: Watching the ABM Video Network requires you to update to version 9 of Adobe's Flash Player. And it's easy to download: Just click here to access the update and download it to your computer!

ABM's 2008 Top Management Meeting was held this week in Chicago and Booz & Company unveiled the largest research study to date, "A Roadmap for Profitable Revenue Growth."
Based on input from ABM's Strategic Planning Committee, the Association commissioned Booz & Company to conduct this landmark industry study exploring three of the most critical issues facing our membership today: content optimization, technological needs and organizational structure.
Booz has expanded upon these issues to identify two key pathways to success - one more traditional pathway built on serving the marketer/seller, and one evolving approach which focuses on the end-user/buyer.
The Booz research study will be presented at Magazines University 2009 in June in Toronto.
The Importance of Advertising During Times of Economic Uncertainty ... It's a Fact
Even in a down economy, more than 95% of executives maintain a high interest in learning about and investing in new products and services.*
86% of marketers agree that when you see a company advertising in a down economy, it keeps them top-of-mind during your purchase decisions and you feel more positive about that company’s commitment to its products and services.*
Firms which maintain or increase their advertising budgets during a recessionary period could boast an average sales growth of 275 percent over the preceding five years.**
These are just a few of the many significant findings that highlight the value of American Business Media’s recently-produced PowerPoint presentation, “The Importance and Value of B2B Advertising During Times of Economic Uncertainty.”
ABM recognizes that some marketers are concerned about investing in advertising during this current period of economic uncertainty. To address these concerns, this presentation summarizes the wealth of data that has been accumulated over time, clearly demonstrating that companies who either steadily continued or aggressively increased their advertising experienced overall growth as well as continual growth past the period of economic uncertainty.

Magazines University assets to be sold to Canadian Business Press
Toronto, 19 Nov. 2008: North Island Publishing Ltd. announced today that it has signed an agreement in principle to sell the Magazines University trademark and related web sites to the Canadian Business Press (CBP).
North Island (through its Masthead magazine brand) and CBP have co-produced the Mags U annual industry conference for the last two years, in partnership with several other magazine industry organizations. Masthead initiated the conference in 1992 in concert with industry organizations, and has owned the Mags U trademark since 2002. Masthead also built and maintained the MagsU.com web site.
“The Magazines University trademark is very important to us at the CBP because the name has been associated with quality and excellence within the magazine publishing community,” said Alex Papanou, Chair of the CBP. “The CBP and its partners will continue to provide our industry with a quality event that we can all be proud of.”
“We are pleased that CBP will continue the Mags U tradition,” said North Island president Alexander Donald. “We have been great partners for many years, and we feel this agreement that clarifies ownership is in the best interests of both Mags U and the industry at large.”
The 18th annual Magazines University is scheduled to take place June 1-2, 2009 at the Old Mill Inn in Toronto, ON.
Terms of the agreement were not announced.

Industry News
The OMDC has announced the release of an important report entitled Strategic Study of the Magazine Industry in Ontario. The study, whose purpose is to provide information and analysis that will lead to the development of an appropriate sectoral strategy for growth in the Ontario magazine industry over the next five years, was authored by TCI Management Consultants, with funding from OMDC on behalf of its Magazine Publishing Industry Advisory Committee. CBP was actively involved on the Advisory Steering Committee.
Karen Thorne-Stone, President & Chief Executive Officer, OMDC in releasing the report commented that “Magazines have a long track record of withstanding competition from new media, and numbers demonstrate that Canadian magazines are holding and even extending their audiences in the face of competition from the Internet. Magazine readership has grown from 4.4 issues read per month in 2003 to five issues read per month in 2007. Across all age groups, the people who read the most magazines are also likely to spend the most time on the Internet.”
She goes on to say, “the study highlights that the most significant success factor for the Magazine Industry over the next five years will continue to be the creation of high quality, relevant content. By 2013, indications point to most consumer magazines in Canada still being printed and distributed predominantly in hard copy. Business-to-business magazines are making a more rapid transition to electronic distribution, but they, too, may still be in print form at that time.”
Finally, Thorne-Stone notes, “the most significant barrier to growth for business-to-business magazines will continue to be a lack of financial resources to make needed investments in both high-quality Canadian content and digital technology. The study’s recommendations are therefore focused on tools that can strengthen the industry’s financial footing.”
These include:
- initiatives by industry associations that build on existing activities in the areas of research, marketing and promotion, training, digital capacity-building and measurement and assessment;
- federal government initiatives, particularly retaining Publications Assistance Program support (or a very similar program) at current or even higher levels of funding;
- a new provincial refundable tax credit for the magazine industry, based on eligible expenditures related to upgrading the amount and quality of editorial content in a magazine or related to upgrading and increasing the amount and variety of the content a magazine distributes digitally; and
- a role for the OMDC as a facilitator to build connections between Ontario’s magazine publishers and firms from other creative sectors.
The announcement letter from Karen Thorne-Stone, President and CEO of OMDC and the Study Steering Committee is available here.

Postal Affairs
On June 26th, Canada Post Corporation (CPC) confirmed that it plans to change its long-standing Letter Carrier Presort (LCP) pricing policy for
Publications MailTM. Effective January 12th 2009, CPC has indicated that it will move LCP mail to a "Distance-based
Pricing Model." Currently, the LCP postage charge is based primarily upon the level of sortation and number of copies going to each postal station.
The new pricing model will be based upon the distance the publication will travel from its induction into the mail system to its final destination. There
will be three separate price points:
- local (distribution within a city/municipality);
- regional (distribution within a province or, in the case of the East Coast, within Atlantic Canada); and
- national (distribution which crosses a provincial border).
This action will result in all publications paying more for the part of the circulation that is mailed outside of the local area where it enters the mail
system; likely, with one price for regional distribution and a higher price for national distribution.
CBP President Philip Boyd has analyzed the impact of Canada Post's recently announced rate increases on national publications entering the postal service
at various geographic locations to assist publishers in determining the estimated percentage increase that will be incurred. The analysis shows the impact of distance-based pricing on a
number of CBP member publications located in four Canadian cities using actual scenarios, not hypothetical situations or fictitious numbers. The increases
are based upon all copies weighing less than 200 grams and qualifying for LCP rates. Boyd illustrates that some mail induction points will experience
increases in excess of 6%. The estimated percentage increases range from 3.89% to 6.19%.
Strategic Review of Canada Post
CBP is currently preparing a submission to the Advisory Panel who is conducting a strategic review of Canada Post. The Honourable Lawrence Cannon,
Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Minister responsible for Canada Post, announced in April that the Government of Canada would
conduct a strategic review of the Canada Post Corporation.
"We are conducting a strategic review of Canada Post to make sure this public institution has the right tools and means to fulfill its mandate in the
future," said Minister Cannon. "This review is being conducted with the full understanding that Canada Post will remain a Crown corporation. In the changing
business context and with new challenges ahead, we want to act now to make sure it continues to fulfill its mandate: delivering essential, universal services
every day to Canadians, while remaining financially self-sustaining."
The review will focus on four major areas: market and competition; public policy objectives and responsibilities; commercial activities; and financial and
performance targets. A review of Canada Post has not been conducted since 1995.
The review is being led by an external, independent advisory panel composed of three members. "I am very pleased that Dr. Robert Campbell has agreed to
chair the panel and that Mr. Daniel H. Bader and Mrs. Nicole Beaudoin will support him as panel members on this important review," said Minister Cannon. "I
look forward to their report and recommendations, which are due to me in December 2008."
Interested groups and individual Canadians are encouraged to provide written submissions to the panel before the closing date of September 2, 2008
by mail or e-mail, or through the following website: www.cpcstrategicreview.gc.ca.

U.S. Business-to-Business Media Experiences a Robust 2007
Despite the current state of economic concern, U.S. industry leaders are optimistic about the future of b-to-b - what is today a $26 billion-plus industry -
based on a strong 2007. While the explosive b-to-b digital market maintains a 20-plus percentage annual growth rate, trade shows continue to perform well and
magazines held their own.
At first glance, U.S. year-end 2007 numbers for b-to-b magazines appear to show a slight decline (-2.0%). However when the numbers are examined more
closely, 13 of the 21 Business Information Network (BIN)
categories show growth. Greatest increases occurred in the categories 'Resources, Environment & Utilities,' 'Architecture, Design & Lighting,' and 'Science,
Research & Development,' each of which boasted year-to-date increases of 12.72%, 10.49%, and 10.11% respectively. In addition, the BIN categories
'Agriculture' and 'Aviation, Aerospace & Military' made impressive comebacks over the last 12 months, ending up at 6.83% and .32% respectively. In fact,
ignoring the 'Computing, Software, Telecomm' category would result in an overall 0% change over 2006.

ABM announces that PRC Agrees with Minimal Rate Increase
Last week, the U.S. Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), ruled that the CPI-capped postal rate increase announced by the
Postal Service last month is in compliance with the new postal reform law. As a result, U.S. postal rates will increase for all classes of mail on May 12.
The Periodicals increase, which the U.S. Postal Service says averages 2.7%, but which appears to average closer to 2.9%, is most noteworthy for being
across-the-board. Therefore, it will affect nearly all U.S. publications by the same percentage. This favorable result for American Business Media members,
one for which they argued long and hard in four sets of written comments, stands in marked contrast to the very uneven increase implemented last July. Read more .
ABM Announces New Research on the Importance
of Advertising During Times of Economic Uncertainty
American Business Media recognizes that some marketers are concerned about investing in advertising during this current
period of economic uncertainty. To address their concerns, ABM has produced a PowerPoint presentation, "The Importance and Value of B2B Advertising During
Times of Economic Uncertainty."
This presentation summarizes the wealth of data that has been accumulated over time clearly demonstrating that companies who either steadily continued or
aggressively increased their advertising experienced overall growth as well as continual growth past the period of economic uncertainty.

You don't want to miss Wednesday (February 27th) morning's Video Network broadcast, as the executive director of CMP
Metaverse, John Jainshigg, shares some fascinating insights on CMP's involvement with the 3-D virtual world Second Life and its value for b-to-b
publishers as a social networking platform.
The very thought of b-to-b companies using online social media platforms like Facebook or Second Life to connect with
audiences and create new revenue opportunities seemed, well, virtually impossible not long ago. So tune in to hear Jainschigg's take on how global social
media platforms can serve as ideal sites for virtual events or bring print content online to engage the audience.

Everyone's talking about the wonders of business information and how it's the key to our industry's future success. But making sense of how to develop
compelling content and set up attractive revenue streams that deliver applications to our customers is never easy. There are myriad business models to
pursue, each with its own distribution and operational structure. And now more than ever, executives are charged with identifying and implementing these new,
profitable revenue streams. At ABM's event this April, find out how business information, also known as rich data, can be an important new addition to your
portfolio. Click here for more information

Make sure your staff and mailing house are aware of revised Canada Post Regulations
We have just received the following reminders from Canada Post. Please make sure your staff and mailing house are aware of
and adhering to the following revised postal regulations. The last thing we want is Members of Canadian Business Press paying more for postage than is
absolutely necessary.
Letter Carrier Presort (LCP)
All mailers should now be entering on the Statement of Mailing (SOM) the number of Local, Regional and National items for each of the five LCP categories
(produced in the Mailing Summary report by the approved presort (SERP) software) in order to avoid any surcharges at the time of deposit. It is important the
each of the eleven potential categories (e.g., Delivery Mode Direct Local or DCF National) be accurately entered on the SOM from the mailing summary report
(a sampling of mailings has revealed some errors on this so far).
- A reminder letter sent in January to all Publications Mail customers extended the date for this change to February 18 to allow for a few anticipated
delays in SERP software testing and implementation. In such cases, all entries must be entered as National on the SOM.
- For PAP-eligible mailings, two SOMs may be required, since the SOM form is limited to 18 lines of data. In such a case, all PAP-eligible entries
should be made on one SOM and all other entries on the second SOM.
Undeliverable Publications Mail (uPM)
It is important for customers who have not yet done so to provide their email address for uPM items if they do not wish to have the entire mail piece
returned at a higher price (the $1.00 uPM processing fee plus Lettermail-like return postage). They can register through our website at www.canadapost.ca/upmform.
- It is also important to ensure the Publications Mail abbreviation (PM or PP en francais) plus agreement number (e.g. 40012345) are visible from the
outside of the Publications Mail piece (front or back cover or spine). The optimal placement is near the address label.
- Although there is no protocol for the "keyline" customer account number placement on the address label, the optimal placement is left-justified on
the line immediately above the addressee's name (e.g. ABC12345678 above Mr. I. M. Qualifyde, etc.).

Case For: Continuity
Effective b-to-b advertising strengthens with time: The more businesspeople see an ad that communicates effectively, the more that message and the
advertiser register. Readex Research recently tracked one brand with a consistent campaign over 33 months and found awareness levels climbed from 56 to 68
per cent during that period.
That’s why American Business Media is offering you access to the newly-revised "Case For: Continuity," one of ten sections within the Case For Series, containing data, industry research and
narrative that proves the powerful impact of business media. So to find out more about increasing audience share through an integrated and continued presence

Case For: Rich Data
Business-to-business media companies are finding new uses for their data, and the results open up innovative opportunities
for marketers. Rather than simply publish data found by industry journalists in magazines and Web sites, media companies are now converting it into products,
services and systems that help businesses run better. Called rich data, these products are high-margin ventures that have the added advantage of reinforcing
authority.
CBP Members can access the newly-revised "Case For: Rich Data," one of 10 sections within the Case For Series, containing data, industry research and narrative that proves the
powerful impact of business media. So to find out more about how rich data creates new channels of business communication to explore, pick up this important
resource for only $5, and learn straight from industry insiders.

KRW Awards Gala
The Canadian Business Press is thrilled to announce that

business-to-business sector at Southam Inc., writing for Canadian Petroleum and Canadian Chemical Engineering magazines. She also worked at
Maclean Hunter as associate editor of Canadian Electronics Engineering, and wrote for Benefits Canada and Office Equipment and Methods.

and Global Television Network. McMurdy now co-ordinates Ottawa area government and business news for local market television stations across the
Global Television Network. Each year the KRW Awards celebrate excellence in business journalism and graphic design, awarding $30,000 in cash prizes in

Attention editors!
It's time to book Wednesday, March 5, 2008. This is the day we hold the Peer
Review judging of submissions entered into the KRW's 13 writing categories.
As usual, judging for the writing categories is done on a two-tier system by editors and journalists working in business, professional and farm
publishing. Your job is to narrow down the search to the top 10 entries in each of the writing categories. (Read more)

Case For: Magazines
Every day, the hardest people to reach in business have one appointment in common: they read the magazines that cover their industries. A recent study
from PennWell Corporation says 78% of print and 75% of digital edition subscribers read three of four issues, with 40 minutes as the average reading time.
That's why American Business Media is offering CBP Members access to the newly-revised "Case For: Magazines," one of 10 sections within the Case For Series, containing data, industry research and
narrative that proves the powerful impact of business media.
Nearly 85% of executives act on what they read in b-to-b magazines. For this reason, magazines are the anchors of the industry and the brands that
executives trust. To find out more about how to utilize your publications to generate a rise in your marketing performance, CBP Members may pick up this
important resource for only $5, and learn straight from industry insiders.
