Crucial Copyright Bill Delayed due to
Pressure from Protest Group

Industry Minister Jim Prentice's proposed copyright bill, which was expected to be introduced last week, has been delayed. After pressure from a protest group regarding the tabling of this bill (most notably within the blogosphere), the much awaited amendments to the Copyright Act may be put on hold indefinitely.

Access Copyright, The Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency, is asking CBP members to stand by the tabling of this bill and the strength of the democratic process. At the very least, creators and publishers deserve the opportunity to see that the bill is tabled to determine the effect of this new legislation.

Access Copyright suggests that you view the blog by John Degen, whose commentary stresses the importance of the legislative process and exposes the huge amount of myth and disinformation being propagated to the public on this issue.

If interested, you can voice your comments on John's blog and show support for the tabling of the new copyright legislation, which is intended to improve the protection of intellectual property rights in Canada.

Rogers' Business & Professional Publishing Group
to join Magazines Canada

Rogers' Business & Professional Publishing Group has decided not to renew its membership in the Canadian Business Press in 2008. The move, announced by Rogers Senior Vice-President John Milne in an e-mail dated November 26th to CBP Chairman David McClung and President Phil Boyd, appears to be directly related to a decision taken at the CBP Board meeting on November 20th.

A member asked that the Board consider a proposal that Canadian Business Press amalgamate with Magazines Canada. Board Members expressed the view that CBP Members are better served with an independent Canadian Business Press association, rather than being integrated into a consumer magazine association.

However, the Board strongly endorsed a motion for dialogue with Magazines Canada on greater co-operation on matters of mutual interest that affect the industry as a whole, particularly with regard to reuniting the associations around one annual magazines event in Toronto. CBP's Chairman David McClung is scheduled to meet with Robert Goyette, Chairman of Magazines Canada, next week.

Milne's e-mail also stated that his group will "...join Magazines Canada as soon as possible..." Rogers Business & Professional Publishing Group represents about 20% of CBP's current membership revenues and 35 of its Member magazines.

New Member

The CBP Board of Directors is pleased to announce its newest member publication which was approved at its meeting on November 20th. Landscape Trades, published by the trade association Landscape Ontario based in Milton, Ontario, reaches the 8,300 leaders of Canada's horticultural industry. Circulation is 100% qualified and verified through CCAB/BPA. Established in 1978, Landscape Trades, is published nine times per year and is the official publication of Landscape Ontario's Congress and Garden Expo.

KRW entry deadline is February 22!

The KRW entry form is now available online! Gather your best work from 2007 to be entered in the 2008 event! Don't forget to carefully review the entry guidelines and categories before you enter!

Business-to-Business Digital and
Face-to-Face Events Continue to Grow

In the multi-platform environment of today's business-to-business landscape, two of the three key content platforms (digital media and face-to-face events) continue to experience growth as magazine revenue and ad pages decline.

According to the latest Business Information Network (BIN) numbers, year-to-date magazine revenue has declined 1.8% through July 2007. Despite the overall decline, a number of individual categories showed healthy gains, led by Architecture, Design & Lighting up 10%; Resources, Environment & Utilities up 9.3%; Science, Research & Development up 9.1%; and Travel, Business Conventions & Meetings up 5.3%.

In January 2005, American Business Media augmented its reporting model for magazine advertising sales in industry markets, as relayed through BIN, by examining 21 markets comprised of all business-to-business books tracked by IMS/The Auditor, and PERQ/HCI for healthcare figures. The data, by category, is available here.

OMDC announces new CEO

Ontario Media Development Corporation chair Kevin Shea announced in June that Toronto film commissioner and former economic development chief Karen Thorne-Stone will be the new president and chief executive officer of the agency. She will commence her new responsibilities at the end of July.

Thorne-Stone has been with the city of Toronto for 18 years, where she served in a variety of roles, including film commissioner and executive director of economic development. As film commissioner, Thorne-Stone worked with the OMDC on the development of a new brand positioning and marketing materials to promote film and television production.

As executive director of economic development, Thorne-Stone led the research and development of a unique brand image for Toronto in collaboration with the provincial and federal governments; established an international marketing strategy to increase Toronto's global profile and positioning as a competitive business and tourism destination.

Thorne-Stone also played a key leadership role in the amalgamation process that formed the new City of Toronto from seven municipalities in 1998.

OMDC's Board strongly praised the performance of Kristine Murphy, who served as acting CEO during the search process. Murphy will return to her position as director of industry development for OMDC.

Thank you...

On behalf of the Magazines University 2007 partners and sponsors, we would like to extend a sincere "thank you" to all those who attended the seminars, lunches and the KRW Awards; particularly to those who completed the post-event survey.

The event attracted 1,330 people and a total of 2,691 seminar and event registrations over 2½ days. Prior to the start of MagsU, the website received 11,860 visits and 28,823 page views. Your seminar evaluations reflected the high caliber of both Canadian and International speakers. The post-event survey, sent to the 483 delegates who indicated that it was OK to send them promotional e-mails, resulted in a response rate of 26% (114).

A sample of the responses: 98% identified professional development as the primary reason for attending MagsU; 94% responded positively to the new format of both 2½ hour and 1¼ hour seminars; 59% said they found the exhibit hall helpful; 83% registered on-line; and 80% rated the venue (The Old Mill) good to excellent - quite a remarkable response and, overall, the best in the event's 16-year history. Full survey results may be accessed here (PDF).

Don't miss Magazines University 2008 - Monday to Wednesday, June 2, 3 & 4, at The Old Mill in Toronto. It's educational, it's fun and clearly the place to be and be seen if you're serious about your career in publishing.

Here are five trends related to the convergence of print with the vast "e" landscape that are now affecting the circulation world. See article by Mark J. Miller, BTB Online.

This trend could have dire consequences for magazine publishers, not only for those few who engage in marketing by mail but also for publishers who rely on the postal services to distribute their publications.
