Be aware of the cost to have Undeliverable Publications MailTM returned
12/19/2007

Canada Post has enhanced the process for handling undeliverable Publications Mail (uPM), which goes into effect on January 14, 2008. At that time, publishers will have a choice of either receiving weekly reports electronically, containing address label information, or having the entire undeliverable Publications Mail item returned by mail.

The new automated uPM process responds to a need identified by both the publishing industry and Canada Post to improve the processing of undeliverable Publications Mail items and the timeliness of returning undeliverable address label information. In addition to providing an improved information turnaround time, automating the return of undeliverable Publications Mail items will provide:

  • reports on a weekly basis (via email link to a secure PosteCSTM server);
  • downloadable data (.csv) as well as a visual report (.pdf);
  • better tracking of undeliverable items against Canada Post invoices; and
  • disposition of the physical copies of the undeliverable publications.

To register for this automated service complete the online registration form at www.canadapost.ca/upmform.

Some customers have indicated that they would like to have their entire publication returned if undeliverable. In this situation, no registration is required and Canada Post will automatically return the entire mail piece to the Canadian return address identified in the detailed identifying information, as described in the Publications Mail Customer Guide. The processing fee for each returned item will be invoiced at $1.00, plus applicable postage (e.g., Non-standard and Oversize LettermailTM "Up to 500 g").

The 2008 Publications Mail Customer Guide reflecting these and other changes effective January 14, 2008, is available at www.canadapost.ca/customer_guides.
