Canadian Business Press (CBP) was
established in 1920 and incorporated as a not-for-profit
association in 1981 to represent the interests of the Canadian
business, professional and farm press. Over 170 business
publications, produced by three large, but mainly medium-sized and
small companies from across the country, benefit from its
services. All Canadian business publications, members or not, receive periodic
bulletins on important issues from the association. Many suppliers
to the industry support the association through associate
membership and participation on committees.
Mandate and Commitments
The CBP's mandate is to foster better
communication among members of the business publishing industry in
Canada, encourage fair practices and co-operation between
government and the private sector, and utilize the unique talents
of its committee members to promote the success and visibility of
the business press in Canada. Association standing committees
include: Communications, Education/Seminars, Internet/e-commerce,
Legislative Affairs, Membership, Nominations, Postal
Affairs/Distribution, Research, Special Events and Supplier
Relations.
Activities
The organization works to promote the business
press as a medium for advertising and as a prime source of
information for and about Canadian business, industry, the
professions and government. The CBP offers professional
development through the annual Magazines University and provides
information services, such as special bulletins on postal and
legislative affairs, by e-mail and broadcast fax. A website keeps
members informed about CBP activities, career opportunities,
association resources, provides a catalogue of member publications
and features a forum for discussion of industry issues. Press
passes are issued to editors, and excellence in writing and
graphic design are recognized through the annual Kenneth R. Wilson
Awards program. Two social events, a golf tournament and a
networking evening featuring a Trivial PursuitŪ Challenge, are
held annually. |
